I realized this month; there was a surge of scam mails sent to my email box daily. Initially, I could not figure it out until I and a friend began to discuss the increased crime rate. We heard stories of people who were robbed. Sadly, the criminals did not just stop at robbing their victims but they also maimed them. Crime increases during Christmas season which makes one wonder what Christmas season has become. A number of the scams mails were winning notifications and invitations to share some inheritance. Only the gullible can be fooled because the prizes being offered are ridiculous. But then, why is there a surge of crime and fraudulence at Christmas season? Is it not because our perception of Christmas has been warped? Christmas is now perceived by some people to be a period to show off, buy expensive cars and clothes; compete with others and throw money around. So if by December there is no money to achieve the selfish and obsessive goals, then money most be gotten by illegitimate means to attain these goals. These people rob their victims of the joy and peace that Christmas signifies.

Christmas day symbolizes the birthday of Jesus Christ who God our father sent to the earth to die for us and when we accept him by faith we are cleansed and made whole. Christ was a gift from God to mankind and a priceless gift at that. Think of it; how easy is it for one to die for another. So how do we respond to such expression of love by our God? Certainly it should not be by being fraudulent, sending scam mails; trying to cheat fellow humans out of what they have.

Rather, we respond by utilizing the season to worship and celebrate Jesus; share of God's goodness and mercies, lend a helping hand to the helpless; rekindle hope in the hopeless; reaching out to the orphans and the widows. By shifting focus from ourselves and reaching out to others, Christmas becomes more purposeful and fulfilling.

Christ is the reason for Christmas! Let us embrace him and all that he stands for.
